RE: furnace problem

Bats?? Seriously??
Ick!
-Lab
Don't laugh! I had the same thing happen to me last month.I went down to our trailer and turned on the furnace to check it before my wife was due to come down the next day. The furnace ran but I definitely smelled something burning outside. I had a semi-cooked bat wedged into the exhaust. Had to pull it out with needle nosed pliers - piece by piece. So I too will be looking into installing screens on both the furnace and hot water tank.

RE: Shower Water Flow

We've got the Oxygenics shower head as well and it's wonderful. We have lots and lots of pressure. It's one of the best additions we've made to our trailer.
Does it have the on/off feature on the head itself like the OEM ones?

RE: GENERATOR, NO Electric Output. Honda

You need to occasionally run the genny under load to maintain it's capability to produce electricity.
Run a few minutes w/o load, plug in a light, fan etc, run 10-15 min with load, unplug device and run a few more minutes w/o load before shutting off.

RE: Filling the fresh water tank

On the question about well water.... If the water is not chlorinated, I would fill it but I would not store the water in their for any length of time. And, at the first opportunity, I would refill the tank and flush the lines with treated water. If the untreated water has been in there for more than a week or so, I think I would re-sanitize the tank and lines just to be safe.
Dave
Untreated well water is all we have where we camp. I just add 1/4 cup of bleach to my 30 gallon barrel before pumping the water into the trailer's tank. And although the well has been tested by the state we only use this water for washing and showering. Drinking water I bring from home.

RE: Leaving a propane fridge on....

Ours has been on since July fourth weekend. I do run a HF solar system though, so battery drainage is not an issue and since we're dry camping I do have a 60 gallon propane tank hooked up. As of last weekend the tank gauge reads 54%. This includes a few weekends of frig AND heater use from April to the end of June as well.
Filled with 48.5 gallons initially, so 30% 0f 48.5 = approx. 15 gallons. And at @ $3.20/gallon = $48 to date.
Sorry to wander off the original concern. But if you lose power, the gas solenoid will shut off gas flow. Our neighbors found that out the hard way when husband left only one battery hooked up and left it running all week after a weekend of fairly heavy use.

RE: Remote refrigerator thermometer

I have a three-remote-channel wireless one from Oregon Scientific. One remote in the freezer, one in the refrigerator, one outside and the "indoor" one at the main panel. It also has a radio-controlled clock. It has worked great for several years.
Wow, a three way! I can't find a two remote set even though the one I have has two channels on the main. I have my remote in the frig and a dial type in the freezer.

RE: Wacky idea?

Search on YouTube or a similar site for kinetic art or kinetic sculpture. There are a lot of interesting videos, maybe some will give you an idea.
I did that as well. Lots of rain chain vids. Some of the wind powered could be modified to work with water. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel so to speak if it's already out there. Right now I'm assembling a cascading waterfalls stand.

Wacky idea?

You know how we "experienced" campers cant our awnings to one side for rain drainage? Well I'd like to make some sort of kinetic rain catcher/deflector for our campsite. I have googled my butt off and the closest things I found were a bamboo tipping fountain and rain chains. What I really would like to make is one of those metallic or wood sculptures like you sometimes see in shopping malls or a water fall type tower. This is for a permanent site so I don't have to worry about packing it up but twice a year. Any ideas out there?
Next year - a cool cover for the large LP tank.

RE: Do these really work? Fridgecool

We just got back from a 9 day stay at the trailer. Seems like the solar powered fan works, maybe too well. We have one of those digital thermometers with the remote sensor and I placed that in the frig. We hit as low as 25F in the frig area some mornings and the freezer was at -10F at those times. I set the control down to 2 ( 3 being the normal) and still got below 32F at times. Daytime temps were mid to high 80's and night were mid to upper 60's. I placed a min/max type thermometer in the frig when I left Monday and will in interested to see what the range was this week when we return to the camper Friday. Will update next week.

RE: Bleach in fresh water tank

I saved this a while back: Dear Consumer:
Thank you for asking about the use of Ultra CLOROX liquid bleach.
In case of an emergency, we recommend boiling water for 1 minute. When boiling is not possible, we recommend filtering water to let suspended particles settle out. Pour off the clear water and add Ultra CLOROX liquid bleach as follows:
1 teaspoon Ultra CLOROX bleach per 5 gallons water
16 drops Ultra CLOROX bleach per 1 gallon water
4 drops Ultra CLOROX bleach per 1 quart water
Wait 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor. If not, repeat dose and wait 15 minutes, then sniff again. Use only Ultra CLOROX bleach, not a scented bleach.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us. Again, thank you for giving me this opportunity to discuss our product.
Sincerely,

RE: Dometic refridgerator not working???

Ok, I did some testing, sort of. I pulled the plug to the 120V at the refrigerator on the outside of the camper, turned on the refrigerator and manually lit the pilot as it would not ignite. After an hour or so the temp did not change in the refrigerator. Usually I can see condensation on the freezer shelf when it begins to get cold. it did not condense. I then just used battery power and manually lit the refrigerator and within 10 minutes it was getting cold and the condensation was on the freezer shelf and dissipating. I guess so far I've determined the igniter may not be working. Can I test it as in with a multimeter? Anything else to check at this point?
Thanks,
I'm not sure I'm following what you did. You say you unplugged the 120. So you were already on battery power in your 1st test? No clicking means the ignitor is probably shot. To test this, remove the circuit board cover and check the outgoing voltage to the ignitor while the frig is trying to start. If you have about 12v at the leads but no clicking replace the ignitor - about $40.

RE: Beginner RVers: Your Awning and Murphy's Law

I, as well as most of the permanent campers in our cg do not roll up our awnings while away during the week. However you do need to take certain measures: Awning must be fully extended and not loose, locking knobs must be tight, use of deflappers, center posts and tie downs is highly recommended. When at camp the awnings are canted to prevent any water buildup and when leaving they are lowered down to the lowest position.
I have been thru numerous high wind and torrential rain storms (including this past weekend) and the only once did anyone at our cg had an awning fail. This person failed to tighten the upper arms AND set up his awing straight across. Well it poured one night and his awning actually filled up with water. The weight of the water was too much for the arms to hold and one side collapsed the next morning. The trailer was about 50 yards away from ours and I heard it happen while having my morning coffee - under our unaffected awning.

RE: older refrigerator problem

ok, I have removed the frige, turned it on all sides for a few hours each side, and now it is right side up, and level. When I tried it on elec, it barely cooled, made gurgleing sounds, and the heat coming out of the stand pipe is warm. I have rigged a hose to run on propane, and see what that does. The heat out the top of standpipe is much hotter, and stronger. I blew out the heat vent/standpipe, and blew off the fins and parts on the back. Can anyone tell me step by step how to check the elec heating element, and can the go bad, and only produce a little heat? Prior to this problem it worked great on propane, and not so good on elec.
I'll tell you right now gurgling - while running the unit is not a good sign. Sounds like you may not have cleared the blockage. I had to do mine twice and the rv center tech recommend either rocking the frig back and forth or taking it out for a bumpy road ride (both measures done in the upside down position.

RE: Dometic refridgerator not working???

Did you check to see if the frig will run on propane? This should confirm it's not the circuit board or igniter that is causing the problem.

RE: nitrogen for tires

I had new truck tires put on about a year ago by Dunn Tire, which uses nitrogen on their tire installations. I have not had to top off at all and stopped doing my weekly pressure test - now every two months. They check the pressure during rotations and top off if necessary. So I guess by not driving on under inflated tires, you will get better gas mileage.

RE: Do these really work? Fridgecool

I had a small spare panel from a solar motion detector light that went bad. So for the last week I set up a computer fan to it and just had it sitting on the deck to see how it would work. Takes fairly strong sunlight to start it but once it's running it will continue to do so even when cloudy. My plan is to set the panel up on the roof and run the wiring down thru the vent down to the fan. I believe someone posted about a similar setup a while back.

Deck Question

I built a 10'x22'deck out of PT 4x4's filled with fine gravel for our site. last year we just placed a couple of odd pieces of carpeting on it. Now we just purchased a large enough indoor/outdoor carpet to cover the entire deck. I plan on going over the 4 x's to secure it but am not sure what to use for fasteners. Staples will rust and possible tear. Are there suitable fasteners for this application?
Any suggestions?

RE: Battery Question

But, the fridge lights fine on shore power, just not when we unplug from shore power? I'm stumped on this one!
Are you on electric or gas when hooked up to shore power? If your frig goes to electric mode a heater element turns and the gas portion, including the igniter, is not used.
Also check voltage to the circuit board both hooked up and stand alone. With a fully charged battery you should only see a slight difference.

RE: Solar Question

I pull the LP detector fuse when we leave and installed a AA battery powered Kiddee(sp?) CO detector to lower our power consumption. I'd get the controller vs direct hookup. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but without a controller with a blocking diode between the batteries and the panel(s) you will get reverse power flow at night.
